Mr Niall O'Kane

We wish to deliver a range of activities for children who receive their eduction through the medium of Gaelic and most of whose parents do not speak Gaelic.
These children livel within a largely english-speaking community and have little oportunity to speak Irish outside the school environment. This will involve the employment of two youth workers who will, together with over 12 volunteers, deliver a range of fun-based activities aimed at providing children an opportunity to speak Gaelic outside of the school environment. this will include the formation of a registered after-schools club, registered youth club and the delviery of a range of capacity building activities for young teenagers. We have already secured an offer of a portion funding (from Foras na Gaeilge) and require a balance 24,000 to secure the employment of two workers for this important project.

CHEERS YOUTH CENTRE, BALLYMONEY

Ballymoney Youth Outreach Trust opened ‘CHEERS’ Youth Centre as a non-alcoholic drop-in facility for 14 to 21 year olds from socially deprived areas around Ballymoney in 1991. In 2003 we moved to new more central premises. Since then we have run a number of projects with young people, the latest of which is a training and development programme for senior users of the centre. This will train and equip them in taking responsibilty for some of the running of the centre, fund raising for charities, leadership training and will culminate in a trip to South Africa in the summer of 2005. Other projects are relationship and sex education, drugs and alcohol awareness, social and lifeskills training.
