This report is the culmination of the mapping stage of our work. It examines what is already happening in the UK and recommends what more needs to be done. It is based on a series of reports by our research partners under the common title of‘Taking the Initiative’ – studies on Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have already been published.
Taking the Initiative
The Taking the Initiative Series maps activity to promote young people’s involvement in public decision making across the five countries of the UK and Ireland. It looks at activity in the fields of national and local government, education and health, illustrated by case studies and ending with an analysis of what more needs to be done.
Scotland Report
Children in Scotland is undertaking a three-year programme, Young People in the Community: Promoting the participation of children and young people in decision making, policy development and planning, funded by the Carnegie United Kingdom Trust. The remit of the study was to investigate the involvement of children and young people in decision making on both issues internal and external to organisations.
Wales Report
The purpose of the study was to investigate the involvement of children and young people in decision making processes in Wales and identify further opportunities for promoting effective practice in involving children and young people in public decision making.
Northern Ireland Report
Save the Children and the Youth Council for Northern Ireland facilitated the Northern Ireland dimension, conducting a survey to provide a general picture of current activity.
